Canyon Bicycles: Leading the Cycling Industry in Sustainability

Canyon Bicycles, a pioneering force in the cycling industry, has not only revolutionized bicycle purchasing with the Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) model but has set a remarkable standard for sustainability. Canyon Bicycles is now addressing sustainability goals encompassing Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions and voluntarily performed a Corporate Carbon Footprint Test (CCF).

By adopting the DTC model, Canyon Bicycles was the first in the sector to disrupt the traditional retail model and established a direct connection with consumers, eliminating intermediaries. The company offers high-quality, performance-driven bicycles in the Road, Trail, Gravel, City and most recently E-bikes.

Now, by addressing the sustainability issues head-on, Canyon is leading the way, not just across its own sector, but across all sectors in pushing this agenda to the forefront. Hopefully this will help consumers make the right buying choices, not just based on the quality of the bikes, but the footprint they leave.

The Corporate Carbon Test: Pioneering Sustainability in the Industry

As a demonstration of their commitment to sustainability, Canyon Bicycles voluntarily underwent the Corporate Carbon Footprint Test, a rigorous assessment of their environmental impact. This test provides a clear roadmap for emissions reduction and the achievement of their carbon neutrality goals.

The results showed the challenges they, and all industries, have:

Scope 1: Direct Green House Gas (GHG) Emissions

Scope 1 emissions, or direct greenhouse gas emissions, are diligently addressed by Canyon Bicycles. The company focuses on energy-efficient manufacturing processes, streamlined supply chains, and transitioning to renewable energy sources to significantly reduce their carbon footprint from internal operations.

The CCF showed Canyon’s scope 1 emissions to be 726t CO2e (metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent) In the last fiscal year, Canyon Bicycles successfully reduced these emissions by 15% through investments in renewable energy and enhanced energy efficiency in their manufacturing facilities.

Scope 2: Indirect GHG Emissions

Scope 2 emissions, linked to purchased energy consumption, are efficiently managed by Canyon Bicycles through clean energy procurement and engagement in partnerships to acquire renewable energy credits. This strategic shift towards sustainable energy usage plays a crucial role in mitigating their overall environmental impact.

The CCF showed Canyon’s scope 1 emissions to be 88t CO2e The company achieved a remarkable 20% reduction in Scope 2 emissions over the past year by sourcing 75% of their energy from renewable sources.

Scope 3: Value Chain GHG Emissions

Scope 3 emissions are the most difficult emissions to control. These encompass the entire value chain's indirect emissions. Sustainable sourcing practices, waste reduction, circularity promotion, and responsible disposal practices are key focus areas to minimize the environmental impact associated with their products. But due to the third party nature of these emissions, action is slower. They make up by far the largest part of the company’s total emissions.

The CCF showed Canyon’s scope 1 emissions to be 82800t CO2e – a massive 99% of the total CO2e. Through sustainable sourcing practices and circular initiatives, Canyon Bicycles successfully reduced its Scope 3 emissions by 10% in the last fiscal year, amounting to 8,000 metric tons of CO2e.

Commitment to Carbon Neutrality

Canyon Bicycles is resolutely committed to achieving carbon neutrality. They have pledged to reduce emissions wherever possible and offset the remaining emissions through investments in verified carbon offset projects, effectively achieving a carbon-neutral status.

The Corporate Carbon Footprint Test is an ongoing commitment for Canyon Bicycles. Continuous monitoring of progress, improvements, and adjustments in strategies to align with evolving sustainability benchmarks and global environmental targets is a hallmark of their dedication. Transparent reporting ensures accountability and encourages continuous improvement.
